I would see this when I was an SJA. I felt like black service members entered the disciplinary process for more minor offenses, and with less rehabilitation than white service members. It’s a tough issue, I didn’t really know how to address. I brought it up with the CO, but he didn’t want to undermine those submitting to the disciplinary process. The problem is subtle enough that’s hard to address. Like the woman in the story, if she had suggested racial bias at the time they would have rolled their eyes, talked to her about accountability, and NJPed her anyway. It’s a good topic of discussion, hope we are able to address it.

If her return flight was delayed due to weather, then the NJP was BS, since inability to return due to circumstances outside of your control is a defense. Comments are closed.
